SPCA program is back again
Published October 8, 2009
SNAP is back.
Jackson County SPCA’s popular Spay or Neuter Assistance Program or SNAP is once again offering discount vouchers to enable all Jackson County residents regardless of income to spay or neuter their dogs.
SNAP volunteers issue vouchers for sterilization surgeries of companion dogs every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the SPCA Shelter, 9822 Alabama Highway 71 near Pisgah. Dog owners complete an application and make a co-payment of $30 and the SPCA pays for the surgery, which is done by appointment at Critter Care, Mountaintop and Williams animal clinics.
Dog owners must bring their co-payments when they apply. Reduced co-payments are available for families with financial hardships. THE SPCA can issue up to five SNAP vouchers per household and vouchers are good for 30 days.
Dog owners who cannot come to the shelter on Saturdays can receive SNAP applications and vouchers by mail if they leave a mailing address on SNAP’s voice mail, 256-605-6062. This is also the number for SNAP information on Saturdays only.
This is the fifth year the SPCA has received a SNAP grant from a national foundation to fund the program. The foundation pays for surgeries of household companion dogs only. Dogs belonging to rescue groups, shelters and breeders are ineligible.
Dogs that have been spayed or neutered are healthier, happier pets with better temperaments and behavior. They live longer and cause fewer problems for owners and the neighbors. Spaying and neutering is the most effective way to reduce pet overpopulation and suffering and early deaths of pets who cannot find homes.
