Winning start for Scottsboro golfers
Published March 6, 2010
The Scottsboro varsity girls golf team finished as the Class 5A state runner-up in 2009.
It’s 2010 season-opening performance Thursday suggests the Cats will likely be a state contender again this season.
Scottsboro posted a score of 129 on its way to a win over Guntersville Thursday at Goose Pond Colony.
"I was very proud of how the girls played for our first match," said Scottsboro coach Alicia Bell. "We battled not only Guntersville and Crossville (in the junior varsity match), but cold temperatures, (fading) daylight and colds. We are all looking forward to warmer golf."
Logan Chaney shot a 3-over 39 to lead the Wildcats while Laura Serrano carded a 44. Stephanie Speers turned in a round of 46 while Beth Fischer shot a 53. The top three scores count toward the overall team score.
Christian Taylor shot a 54 to pace Guntersville, which also got a 59 from Emily Alice Carnes and a 61 from Pooh Alldredge.
Scottsboro travels to play Fort Payne at Terrapin Hills on Monday. The Wildcats then play in the Gadsden City Invitational on Tuesday at Twin Bridges Golf Course in Gadsden.
• Scottsboro 168, Guntersville 177 — The Scottsboro varsity boys golf team began the new season on a victorious note on Thursday.
Scottsboro opened its season with a nine-shot victory over Guntersville at Goose Pond Colony Golf Course.
SHS coach Stan Gibby said his team didn't play its best but was happy with the season-opening victory.
"With all the poor weather we’ve had and the little practice we’ve been able get in, we’re probably fortunate," he said. "Our players know that we have a long way to go to be able to compete on a state level, but this is just the first match. The season is just getting started and we are looking to make steady improvement each and every time we compete."
Cole Jones was Scottsboro's top scorer Thursday, posting a 3-over par 39. His round included six pars.
"He had nothing worse than bogey," Gibby said of the sophomore. "That's encouraging to have a young player control his round like he did."
Kyle Williams and 2009 Class 5A individual state champion Thomas Looney both shot 5-over 41 for the Wildcats. David Scott Stewart added a 47 and Taylor Kean shot a 50. The top four scores count toward the overall team score.
Trevor Conner's 5-over 41 led Guntersville, which also got a 44 from Coby Glassco, a 46 from both Landon Lovell and John Beam and a 52 from Kevin Martin.
Scottsboro will hit the course Monday at Terrapin Hills against Fort Payne.
• Junior Varsity Boys Scottsboro 189, Guntersville 195 — Grant Beck carded a 45 to pace the Scottsboro junior varsity boys to a six-shot win.
Austin Garza shot a 46 while Derek Bass carded a 47, Brady Dukes a 48 and Stephen Mardis a 49. John Clay Dollar turned in a 45 to lead Guntersville.
• Junior Varsity Girls Scottsboro 153, Crossville 174 — The SHS junior varsity also started their season with a win.
