Pisgah repeats as area champion
Published February 9, 2010
The Pisgah Eagles defended their title Monday night.
The No. 3-ranked Eagles defeated No. 7 Sylvania 75-65 in the finals of the Class 3A Area 14 Tournament, giving Pisgah its second straight area crown.
The Eagles defeated Crossville in last season's title game.
Pisgah improved to 4-0 against Sylvania this season, twice defeating the Rams in tournament championship games. Pisgah beat Sylvania in the Sand Mountain Tournament final on Dec. 30.
The Eagles (20-7) will host 3A Area 13 runner-up Brindlee Mountain in the sub-regional round Friday at 7 p.m. The winner advances to next week's Northeast Regional Tournament at Jacksonville State University.
"It's big to get to play at home," said Pisgah coach Woody Beard. "You always seem to shoot better, to play better, when your at home. We've got a bunch of seniors and it's special for them to play here one last time."
Skylar Hall and Josh Perialas did most of the offensive damage for Pisgah on Monday.
Perialas scored a game-high 29 points while Hall finished with 25. The Eagles also got 10 points from Zac Barringer.
Pisgah raced in front 16-3 early in the first quarter but had to settle for a 25-18 lead after one quarter. The Eagles led 41-28 at halftime.
"We shot the ball really well early and got some run out layups on their turnovers," Beard said. "We should've put it away but we didn't. We led by 20 in the first half but we got in a hurry on offense, did some silly stuff and took some crazy shots."
Sylvania trimmed Pisgah's lead to 52-48 after three quarters. Pisgah however outscored the Rams 23-17 in the final period to seal the victory, its 13th in its last 14 games.
Addison Santiago, a recent junior varsity promotion, scored 21 points to lead Sylvania (19-11), which will visit 3A Area 13 champion Holly Pond in the sub-regionals.
Donovan Dalton added 15 points and Zach King had 10.
