Bob Jones Bridge to be narrowed to one-lane

Published November 17, 2009

The left lane of Bob Jones Bridge, coming into Scottsboro, will be closed beginning in December.

Sam Phillips, project engineer for Farmers Telecommunications Cooperative Inc., said Lambert, Inc. of Stevenson was awarded a project to fasten a conduit on the under side of the bridge.

Total cost of the project is $174,000.

Phillips said Farmers will place a fiber optic cable there at a later time.

Beginning December 7, the left lane of the bridge will be closed from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday-Friday.

“We’re hoping to be finished by March 1, 2010 at the latest,” Phillips said. “With good luck — meaning good weather — we could be done sooner.”

The contract calls for the job to be done in 45 working days.

The lane of the bridge won’t be closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day.

Phillips said there will be advance warning signs of the one-lane bridge, along with directional boards.

“The total length of the bridge is 4,300 feet,” Phillips said. “We’ll only close roughly 1,000 feet each time. We’ll take it down at the end of the day.”
