Helping the Moriah Home
Published March 20, 2009
Moriah Christian Children’s Home is in need of some outdoor activities for the girls living there, and a group of local churches is raising funds to provide for that need.
On Saturday, April 25, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Scottsboro will build the small concrete outdoor basketball court at the home as part of their National Day of Service.
According to Bob Cuthbertson, a leader in the church, the labor for the project is there, but what is needed are funds for materials. Cuthbertson said the project will require $3,000 to cover the cost of materials.
Other local churches have shown interest in joining the project, but more help is still needed.
If you, your church or business would like to donate materials or money to purchase materials, please contact Cuthbertson at 259-4333 or Marilyn Fratangelo, Moriah board member and founder, at 599-2028. Donations may be made payable to Moriah Christian Children’s Home at P.O. Box 58, Dutton, Ala. 35744.
Moriah Christian Children’s Home is a non-profit home for girls ages 12-18. The home is licensed to house girls ages 6-18, but they try to not take girls under the age of 12. The Moriah Home is located on a 40-acre farm in Dutton,
After years of fund-raising, construction and jumping through government and legal hoops, Moriah was officially licensed to house up to eight girls ages 6 to 18 in March of 2008. By the end of that month, the first two girls had moved into the home.
Phyllis Watkins serves as the home’s director, and Andy and Keisha Gardner, along with their daughter, live in the house and serve as house parents.
The new basketball court will allow the girls to have a place to get exercise and play outside.
