The body of Billy Clay Tipton, 19, of Hodge was found Sunday afternoon near Pleasant Grove.
Tipton, reportedly searching for a place to camp, apparently fell nearly 100-feet to his death sometime over the weekend. He was in an area on Sand Mountain overlooking the Tennessee River, south of Gorham’s Bluff.
Jackson County Sheriff’s Department Chief Inv. Chuck Phillips said Monday that the body was recovered by members of the Scottsboro-Jackson County Rescue Squad Sunday afternoon. The incident was reported by a friend of Tipton’s who discovered the body while hiking the area around noon on Sunday.
Assistant Jackson County Coroner John David Jordan responded to the scene in addition to members of the sheriffs department and rescue squad.
Foul play is not expected in the incident, though it is still under investigation. Tipton’s whereabouts had been unaccounted for since 2 p.m. Friday.
