Commission settles with Parrett Trucking
Published October 28, 2009
The Jackson County Commission agreed Monday night to refund more than $37,000 in a settlement agreement with Parrett Trucking Company.
Voting unanimously, the commission approved a motion to refund $37,957.72 in use taxes to the former trucking company over a period of three years.
County attorney John Porter said the payments will equal just over $12,000 per year. He said Parrett agreed to accept the payments in installments “as to not cause a great burden on any of the taxing authorities.”
“Even though times are not good for anybody, its more palpable than paying out a large amount at one time,” Porter said.
Parrett Trucking Company was sued by the county in 2004 for failing to disclose financial records to the county's auditors. The county alleged Parrett either purchased trucks without paying a sales tax or neglected to pay a use tax for vehicles it purchased out of state.
According to published reports, Mike Parrett sold the company to Maverick Service Center in 2004.
The commission also voted to approve a resolution for Porter to obtain an attorney general’s opinion on a potential public works contract.
Commissioners voted unanimously for the motion after reconvening the regular meeting from a 20-minute executive session to discuss matters of pending or threatened litigation.
