Published November 19, 2009
The Scottsboro wrestling team got two firsts on Tuesday.
The Wildcats held off Class 5A rival Southside 42-27 for their first win of the 2009-10 season.
The Wildcats also gave new head coach Daryle Qualls his first victory at Scottsboro. The veteran coach spent 18 years as the head coach at Athens, leading the program to six state championships and four runner-up finishes.
Tuesday was also "Alumni Night" at Carter Gym. Former coaches and wrestlers were recognized, and the new Wall of Champions, which includes a complete list of former Scottsboro state champions, was dedicated.
On the mat, the new season began in good fashion for the Wildcats.
The night started with 103-pound returning state champion Brandon Womack defeating returning state qualifier Haden Ryals 13-6 to put Scottsboro on the board first with three points.
At 112 pounds, Titus Worthen received a forfeit increasing Scottsboro’s lead by six points. Scottsboro’s second returning state champion, Tyler Shankles, then defeated Seth Perman 6-4 at 125 pounds. Perman placed third at state last season.
Nick Boyett, a state finisher last year, had the fastest pin of the night. Boyett pinned Cody Biship 24 seconds into the first period to up Scottsboro’s lead to 18-6.
In the 130-pound division, Philip Jones had an impressive finish over returning state fourth-place finisher Zac West, winning the match by a 6-1 count.
Scottsboro wasn’t as strong in the heavyweight classes last season, but Tuesday’s match showed signs of improvement The Wildcats came from behind to win the last four matches of the evening to lock up the 15-point victory.
Scottsboro’s 171-pound returning state fourth-place finisher Zach Mardis entered his match with the team trailing Southside 27-21. The match between Mardis and Dakota Isbell energized the crowd as Mardis came away with a physical 3-2 win.
Matt Garner pulled in six points for Scottsboro as he pinned Ian Krissie with 15 seconds remaining in the first period at 189 pounds.
At 215 pounds, Dayne Proctor battled Davis Sims before winning by pin with only one second to go in the first period. Proctor’s win clinched the match victory for Scottsboro.
In the final match, Matthew Franko started his heavyweight match on the side of the mat, giving up a takedown to Alex Hudgins. After escaping a near pin, Franko took Hudgins down and held on for the pin 1:29 into the first period.
The Wildcats return to the mat for a tough early season test when they host the Scottsboro Early Bird Duals on Saturday at Carter Gym.
