Locals shine in college sports

Former Scottsboro standout Haley Nelson helped the Belmont Bruins women's basketball team claim a win over Alabama on Saturday.
Nelson scored a career-high 20 points and grabbed 19 rebounds against the Crimson Tide during Belmont's 69-67 overtime win in Nashville.
Nelson, a sophomore, is averaging 18 points and 16.7 rebounds per contest through three games and is shooting at a 64 percent clip. Belmont, a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, is currently 3-0 on the young season.
On Monday, The A-Sun announced that Nelson was the conference's Co-Player of the Week, sharing the honor with Mercer's Courtney Ford.
• Former North Jackson standout Shrader helps seal Army's win — Ty Shrader made the most of his first game action in college football.
The former North Jackson standout made the game-clinching interception as Army held off North Texas for a 17-13 win on Saturday in Denton, Texas.
Shrader also recovered a fumble and made three tackles.
Shrader was a four-year starter at safety for North Jackson from 2004-2007.
He holds the North Jackson school record for career interceptions (26).
