Enroll now in Jackson Co. master gardeners

Published January 14, 2009

Enrollment has begun for the Jackson County Master Gardeners Spring Class of 2009.

The Master Gardeners program is open to anyone interested in improving their knowledge in gardening. Students will receive a total of 40 hours of instruction in plant science and horticulture.

Applications can be picked up at the Jackson County Extension office or by calling 574-2143 or 845-8595 to speak to someone in the DeKalb County Extension office.

All applications must be turned in by Jan. 30. A $75 fee per person to cover the cost of materials will be due after applicants are notified in writing that they have been accepted into the class.

Classes will start on Thursday, March 12, and will continue on each Thursday for 12 weeks. All classes will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Scottsboro, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Introductory sessions will include the topics of plant physiology, entomology, plant pathology and soil fertility. These general subjects will then be followed by more detailed classes on landscaping design, ornamental plants, lawns, house plants, propogation, home orchards, annuals, perennials and other related topics.

As part of the requirement for taking the class, Master Gardeners will be asked to volunteer 40 hours of community service through beautification projects and local extension horticulture programs. These volunteer activities allow Master Gardeners to share knowledge and experience with each other.
