Scoring binge
Published October 31, 2009
North Jackson's offensive woes appear to be in the rearview mirror.
The Class 4A Chiefs scored 49 first-half points en route to a 56-34 victory over visiting 5A Etowah Friday night at R.D. Hicks Stadium in Stevenson.
The win gave North Jackson (7-3) its third straight over the Blue Devils and sends the Chiefs into a Class 4A first-round matchup at state-ranked Brooks brimming with confidence.
North Jackson's offense finished with 375 total yards and 16 first downs. The only negative was five lost fumbles, but they weren't costly Friday night.
Montel Hale's 4-yard touchdown run and the first of Cesar Diaz's eight PATs gave the Chiefs a 7-0 lead with 7:08 left in the opening quarter. After an interception by Denzel Bynum, Chiefs' quarterback Will Richard hit Jovani Taylor for a 6-yard TD and a 14-0 lead less than a minute later.
Jonathan Cronan's 79-yard touchdown run pulled Etowah (4-6) within 14-6 with 5:20 left in the first period, but North Jackson followed with Richard’s touchdown passes of 4 yards to Taylor and 39 yards to Hale to close the opening quarter with a 28-6 advantage.
Hale's second rushing touchdown, a 2-yarder, pushed the Chiefs in front 35-6 just 40 seconds in the second period.
Chase Cleveland caught a 47-yard TD pass from Miles Nordgren with 4:31 left in the half, but the play did nothing to stop North Jackson's surge.
Bynum returned the kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown — the second straight game he's done so — to give North Jackson a 42-13 advantage.
Cronan's 32-yard TD reception from Nordgren made it 42-19 with 1:38 left before halftime, but the Chiefs countered 10 seconds later with a 59-yard TD pass from Richard to Hale for a 49-20 halftime lead.
Hale caught a 24-yard TD pass from Richard with 7:02 left in the third quarter to close out the scoring for North Jackson, which has scored 100 points combined in its last two games.
Hale finished with seven catches for 183 yards and three touchdowns while adding 45 rushing yards and two scores on 12 carries. Richard was 12-of-16 passing for 236 yards and five TDs, and Taylor made three catches for 46 yards and two scores. Cord Wordlaw led the Chiefs' rushing attack with 85 yards on 15 carries.
Etowah closed the gap with two late touchdowns, a 63-yard pass from Nordgren to Darrin Peterson and a 4-yard run from Cronan. Nordgren completed 13 of 25 passes for 391 yards and three touchdowns. He was intercepted twice, once each by Bynum and Brandon Smith.
