County board hires for new school year

The Jackson County Board of Education approved 13 new employees for the upcoming academic year at its meeting Thursday afternoon.

The board approved the employment of Megan Hastings as a teacher Bridgeport Elementary; Danyel Hatfield as a special education teacher at Pisgah High; Tisha Mount as a 50 percent teacher at Stevenson Elementary; Brett Smith as a science teacher at Woodville High; Andrea Popwell as a pre-kindergarten aide at Woodville High; Amanda Adkins as a county-wide nurse; Leigh King, Brian Smith and Karen McBee as county-wide special service bus aides; Tanzie Hodge as a bus driver for Bryant Elementary; Janice Rogers as a bus driver for North Jackson High; Rhonda McDonald as a bus driver for Woodville High; and Ann Privette as a six-hour Child Nutrition Program worker at Bridgeport Elementary.

All of the new employments are effective Tuesday, Aug. 4.

A two-year probationary contract was approved for Bruce Maples as principal at Woodville High School, effective July 1.

Bridgeport Middle School also has a new principal. The board approved the transfer of A.J. Buckner to Bridgeport Middle, effective July 7. Buckner had been the assistant principal at North Jackson High.

Kevin McBride was transferred to 10-month assistant principal at Woodville High, effective July 28.

The board also approved the transfers of Derek Pendergrass from elementary teacher at Skyline High to elementary teacher at Section High, effective Aug. 4; Beth Tyler from teacher at Bridgeport Elementary to elementary teacher at Skyline High, effective Aug. 4; Sheila Cloud from CNP worker at Bridgeport Elementary to a county-wide special service aide (57 percent only), effective Aug. 4; Derek Wright from computer technician to assistant network administrator, effective July 1; and Willard Wilborn from a three-hour custodian at Dutton Elementary to a seven-hour custodian at Macedonia Elementary, effective Aug. 1.

Board members also accepted the following resignations: Carlton Rice as special education teacher at North Jackson High, effective July 13; Paige Bishop as 50 percent math teacher at Paint Rock Valley High, effective July 1; Kelly Etheredge as science teacher at Woodville High, effective July 13; Kathy Gilbert as county-wide nurse, effective July 14.

The board also met in executive session during the meeting to discuss the good name and character of an employee. No action was taken after the closed session.

In other business, the board:

• tabled the approval the 2009 Child Nutrition Handbook.

• tabled a motion to approve the Transportation Handbook.

• approved a motion to approve a revision of the Accounting Regulations Manual.

• approved the 2009-2010 Student/Parent handbook.

• approved revisions to the Board Policy Handbook.

• approved a job description for the English Language Learners Program Specialist.

• approved the implementation of the State Department of Education's EducateAlabama program, a new evaluation system for school personnel.

• approved Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Company for student school accident insurance for the 2009-2010 school year.

• approved the 2009-2010 salary schedules.

• approved the revised organizational chart.

• approved the financial reports for June 2009.

• approved to pay the bills and accounts for July 2009.

The next Jackson County Board of Education meeting will be Thursday, July 30 at 6 p.m. at the Teacher Resource Center.
