Golfing again
Published July 29, 2010
Kyle Williams got his first set of golf clubs at the age of 2 and has been playing ever since.
The soon-to-be 18-year-old — his birthday is Monday — thought his competitive golf career was over when he graduated from Scottsboro High School after a successful run as a member of the varsity golf team.
Williams was all set to attend UAH this fall, but decided to give the thought of playing college golf one last try.
A few weeks later, Williams' golfing career will continue on after he signed a letter of intent to play for Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn.
"I sent a form in to them and the coach called and asked me to come up and play a round with one of the players," Williams said. "After that, he signed me up."
Williams said he's excited about the opportunity.
"It's going to be fun. It's going to be more competitive than high school," he said. "I'm just very, very excited."
Maryville head coach Ron Waters is expecting Williams to contribute immediately to the Scots' golf team.
"Kyle is an excellent player who will give our line-up added depth," Waters said.
Williams was a fixture in Scottsboro's line-up the past three years, helping the team advance to the sub-state round the past two seasons. He's the second Wildcat from the 2010 squad to sign scholarship papers, joining UNA signee Thomas Looney.
Williams said he will major in either business management or education at Maryville.
