Doing good for self and community

Published August 25, 2008

Runners and walkers of all ages are needed for the second annual PHP 5K Invitational Saturday, Sept. 13.

With 100 percent of the proceeds from the invitational going to Christmas Charities of Jackson County, Carlos Serrano, president and CEO of Polyamide High Performance, sees the event as a win-win situation.

“One, you can do good for yourself, and two, you can do good to others by helping families in need through Christmas Charities,” said Serrano.

Serrano started the race last year in hopes of promoting wellness and fitness at Polyamide and other industries in Jackson County. He created a training program for Polyamide employees to train for the race.

“The original and main purpose of the race was to promote physical fitness,” said Serrano.

This year, Serrano decided to open the event to the entire county. There will be a $10 fee to enter the race.

“We at Polyamide High Performance have supported Christmas Charities for the last several years. The demand for funding increases every year. This is a good way to help them collect money early in the year,” said Serrano. “The money will go to a wonderful cause.”

Members of Christmas Charities are grateful to Polyamide for the commitment to donate the proceeds from the event.

“Polyamide has been there for Christmas Charities at a time when ‘making it’ through the Christmas season was questionable,” said Cindy Butler.

This year is expected to be one of the most challenging years for Christmas Charities due to the economic downturn.

“They are exemplary stewards of our community,” said Butler.

The event is sponsored by Polyamide and The Scottsboro Tri-Sport Athletic Association (STAA). The 3.1 mile race will begin at 9 a.m. at Goose Pond Colony.

Race packets can be picked up on Friday, Sept. 12 from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Goose Pond Pavilion. Registration, sign-in and packet pick-up will be held the day of the race from 6 until 8:30 a.m.

Each finisher will receive a medal. Each participant will also receive a race day shirt. Prizes will be awarded for top finishers. All finishers will be eligible to win several prizes including a treadmill, a running watch, a $125 gift certificate to Fleet Feet in Huntsville and many other prizes.

After the race, participants can enjoy a brunch served by The Docks. There will also be massage therapy available for runners. During the race, there will be several bands performing.

There will be an award for Polyamide employees. Polyamide will pay one-month insurance premium to the top finisher.

“Since starting the training program and the race, we have had several employees that have started running on a daily basis,” said Serrano. “Several have told me that they are in the best physical condition they have been in years.”

Many of the employees that are participating in the training program have seen a major change in their lives. They have more energy and take part in physical exercise many times a week.

Serrano hopes to have at least 300 people at the event. He encourages all runners, walkers and joggers to enter the race.

The event will start on the road near the amphitheater. It will lead into the Goose Pond Trail and go around to the Scottsboro-Goose Pond Civic Center parking lot. The course will then loop around and go back through the trail ending at the beach area by The Docks.

“It is a very scenic course,” said Serrano. “There are a few ups and downs, but it is a very easy trail.”

Participants can sign up on the website at www.staa5K.org. An entry form can be printed and mailed to P.O. Box 396, Scottsboro, AL 35768.

“It is going to be a lot of fun,” said Serrano. “We are encouraging people of all ages to come out and participate. The more people that participate, the more money we can raise for Christmas Charities.”
