Club hears Camp Jackson update

Published February 25, 2010

Officials with the Boy Scouts of America and the Greater Alabama Council for the BSA visited the Scottsboro Rotary Club Wednesday with an update on Camp Jackson.

“Camp Jackson is a jewel within the Boy Scouts,” said Boy Scout Executive Tim Cooper, who spoke to the Rotarians at their weekly meeting.

Cooper, along with Scottsboro Rotary member Gene Hess, showed club members a slide show up projects completed at the 515-acre camp, which is located four miles east of Scottsboro. Projects completed include the refurbishing of the administrative lodge, replacement of the sailboat dock and a large cleanup effort. Cooper also said the HVAC units were being replaced by Scottsboro's Southern Heating and Cooling.

Cooper told the group the business owner and Rotary member Tony Kaschak was donating more than $100,000 of in-kind services to see the HVAC units are replaced in each major building.

Kaschak, along with Lenox Industries executive Jim Crim, were presented eagle statues for the contributions to the 42-year-old camp. Rotary Club President Ann Kennamer also received a statue for the club's $5,000 investment.

Cooper said with the funds from the club, along with other funds, will be used to purchase essential items for 2010, including mountain bikes with pads and helmets, platform tents, mattresses, archery equipment and climbing and caving equipment. The camp is being turned into a high-adventure site.

Cooper told the club that there are some 900 Boy Scouts in 30 units in Jackson County. He said 11 young men have received Eagle Scout honors this year.
