A split decision

The Scottsboro Wildcats wrestling team earned a split decision in its first big meet of the season.

The Wildcats finished 2-2 in the Scottsboro Early Bird Duals Saturday at Carter Gym.

Scottsboro (3-2) picked up wins over Class 6A squads Sparkman and Pelham but suffered setbacks to 6A's Hoover and Mountain Brook.

The Wildcats' most dominant effort came against Sparkman, a 60-18 victory.

Scottsboro posted six wins by pin during the match. All of Sparkman's points came via forfeit.

Matthew Franko earned the fastest pin, needing just 52 seconds to get the win in the 289-pound weight class.

Nick Boyette earned a pinfall win in 54 seconds in the 130 class, while Chase McClure scored a pin in 1:03 at 140.

John Will White notched a pin in 1:46 at 152, while Zach Mardis won by pin at the 2:39 mark in 171-pound competition. Phillip Jones won by pin in the third period (4:32) at 135.

Titus Worthen earned a win at 112 by a 3-0 decision over Sparkman's D'Antonio Austin, while Cole Bartlett won 6-0 at 119. Brandon Womack was a winner at 103 via forfeit, as was Dayne Procter at 215.

•Scottsboro 53, Pelham 24 — Franko again took fastest pin honors for Scottsboro, winning the 289-pound match in only 42 seconds.

Mardis won by pinfall in 1:17 at 171, while Procter pinned his opponent in 1:44 at 189. Jones won by pin at the 4:27 mark of the third period in 135 competition.

Boyette took an 8-0 major decision victory at 130, while Chase McClure took a 9-1 major decision win at 140 and White won 7-5 at 160. Womack at 103, Worthen at 112 and Daniel Welch at 152 each won by forfeit.

• Mountain Brook 42, Scottsboro 36 — Boyette scored a pin in 55 seconds to win at 130, while Womack needed only a minute to win by pint at 103. Procter was a winner at 215 by pin in 1:09, while Jones won by pin in 3:02 in 135-pound competition. Mardis scored a third period pin for a win at 171. Worthen won via forfeit at 112.

• Hoover 49, Scottsboro 27 — The 6A Bucs won the final two matches to secure the victory. Womack (103), Jones (135) and Mardis (171) each won by pinfall for Scottsboro, while White won a 7-6 decision at 152 and Procter won via forfeit at 215.
