Woodville wins opener in thrilling fashion

The 2009-10 prep basketball season started in thrilling fashion for the Woodville girls on Saturday.

Brittney Chism sank a jumpshot as time expired to give the Panthers a 41-40 season-opening victory over Randolph in the Woodville Tip-Off Tournament.

"The game was back and forth the whole time," said Woodville coach Joey Swinford. "It was a very exciting win for the team."

Class 3A Randolph led 11-8 after one quarter, 23-20 at halftime and 28-26 entering the fourth quarter. Randolph had taken a 40-39 lead with four seconds left before the Panthers pulled out the victory.

Sandra Osburn and Travannah Roden each scored 11 points for Woodville (1-0), which also got eight points from Rebecca Tidwell and seven from Chism. Laura Van Puerstm scored nine points for Randolph while Ayeshia Patel had eight.

Westminster Christian 56, Skyline 45 — At the Woodville Tip-off Tournament on Saturday, Skyline’s girls couldn’t over come a 28-14 halftime deficit.

Eighth-grader Courtney Gifford had 21 points for the Vikings (0-1), while Maggie Warren had 13.

Boys
Westminster Christian 60, Skyline 51 — At the Woodville Tip-off Tournament on Saturday, the 2A Wildcats outscored Skyline 21-12 in the final quarter to earn the win. Skyline (0-1) led 17-11 after one quarter and 27-22 at halftime before Westminster Christian tied the game at 39-all after three.

The loss spoiled the Skyline head coaching debut Derek Wynn. "We played with good effort and defensively we played pretty well," Wynn said. "(Westminster) made some shots down the stretch and we couldn't answer."

Jacob McClennon scored 18 points for Skyline, which also got 10 points from Nick Talley.

Randolph 66, Woodville 59 — At the Woodville Tip-off Tournament on Saturday, Randolph held off Woodville in the fourth period.

Woodville led 16-15 after one period, but trailed 33-22 at halftime and 45-44 after three.

Jacob Maynard had 18 points and seven rebounds while Coty Durham had 16 points and 11 boards for Woodville (0-1). Kyle Holt had nine points and six steals, and Brent Lankford added seven points and 10 assist.

"Effort wasn't the problem," said Woodville coach Bo Harding. "We didn't shoot well. That got us."
