Sessions backs nuclear power

Published August 28, 2008

Alabama's junior senator, Jeff Sessions (R-Mobile), told a small crowd Tuesday at The Docks Restaurant in Scottsboro that it is time for the U.S. to make nuclear energy part of its overall energy plan.

"Nuclear power is our future," Sessions said during his annual town-hall style meeting in Jackson County. "We need to utilize our money and make sure that places like Bellefonte can be productive.”

Sessions visit was sponsored by the Greater Jackson County Chamber of Commerce.

"Why would you not let them (TVA) spend $2 billion, when within five years it will more than make up for that?," Sessions answered in response to a question from the floor noting the utility's $25 billion debt and raising doubts about TVA's ability to meet its obligations. "You can't not modernize a power plant because of debt."

Sessions also favors quicker development of electric and hybrid vehicles, more off-shore drilling and using the latest technology to produce more ethanol.

"People think that we will spoil that area (Alaska) and they're wrong. It's a myth." Sessions said of the need to drill huge oil reserves located in the state.

The senator, who took office in 1997, said the country needs to be more vigilant about illegal immigrants, saying, "we need a stronger border patrol. Actually illegal immigration is down over the past year with 1.1 million arrests at the border."

There is no doubt where Sessions' allegiance lies in the upcoming presidential race.

"John (McCain) is a great man. He is very disciplined, a remarkable person who has served in the military and has really prepared himself for the role of President. We really need to think about which person would be best to lead America and represent us and our legitimate interest," said Sessions.

Sessions made a stop in nearby DeKalb County after his stop in Scottsboro. He viewed SmartBoard technology and met with teachers, students and local officials during his visit to Fort Payne.

The senator serves on the Judiciary, Armed Services and the Joint Economic and Budget committees among others.
