Tidmore steps down at SHS
Published November 11, 2009
Freddie Tidmore confirmed to The Daily Sentinel Tuesday that he has stepped down as Scottsboro High School head football coach.
Tidmore told his players earlier in the day Tuesday.
“I just think it's time for a change for the football team and me,” said Tidmore. “I appreciate these kids and wish them the best of luck. They’ve worked hard for us the last five years.”
After spending 11 seasons as an assistant, Tidmore was promoted to head coach in 2005, following the resignation of Larry Morris, who became the school system's athletic director.
“He has given us his letter of resignation,” Morris said in a brief phone interview. “As soon as the board acts at its next regular meeting we will post the job and begin the search for a new coach.”
During the last five years, Tidmore's record at Scottsboro was 17-36, including this season's 1-9 mark. Three of his teams made playoff appearances.
“I would like to thank Freddie for his services and efforts the past five years,” Morris said. “And I would like to thank him for all the help he gave me during his time as an assistant coach. We wish him nothing but the best.”
Tidmore’s career coaching record is 64-80. He also spent eight years as head coach at Pisgah High School.
Morris said Tidmore's resignation letter indicated he was stepping down as head football coach in the best interest of himself, his family and the football program. Tidmore, Morris said, did not resign his teaching responsibilities.
His first team at Pisgah, in 1987, started slow at 2-3 before finishing on a roll at 8-4. The Eagles defeated Stevenson in its final season 12-7 before knocking off defending Class 3A state champion Crossville in the last regular season game 21-14 in overtime. The win broke Crossville's 24-game winning streak.
"We're going to search to find the best coach we can find. We will make a valid and concerted effort to find a football coach to carry our program forward," Morris said. "We will look at all applicants."
Morris said the job would be posted on the school's Web site, the Alabama High School Athletic Association Web site and the Alabama Department of Education Web site.
