Cedar Hill Cemetery may get needed work
Published May 20, 2009
Cedar Hill Cemetery in Scottsboro is in need of some work, according to members of an advisory committee board.
"There is a bad erosion problem," committee member Jerry Cunningham told the city council during a work session Monday evening.
Cunningham said the erosion has accelerated over the past 50 years, since a tornado hit the city in 1956.
That same tornado, he said, took down the cedar trees at the cemetery, which was established in 1875.
"We've got to stop the erosion," Cunningham said. "We all have people buried there. We need to provide dignity and respect for our loved ones."
Council President Matthew Hodges agreed, adding that drainage is causing a major problem.
"There's a lot of grass washed away," said Hodges. "The heavy rain has taken away a lot of the dirt."
Cunningham added that many head stones in the cemetery needed to be cleaned. And also several monuments needed to be repaired.
Hodges said he hoped to see the community get involved with the project.
"I am glad we have a committee to push this along," said Hodges.
The hope is grants and donations will take care of much of the work. Cunningham said the estimated cost of taking care of the erosion problem is just over $150,000.
Hodges said he is hoping a full outlined plan is presented to the public soon on all the repairs needed at the cemetery.
