SSA nets close win over Cullman

Published July 13, 2010

With several key male swimmers absent, SSA head coach Diane Richard knew she was faced with the prospect of winning only six of 20 relay events in the Wildcats' season finale against Cullman.

Knowing that the team needed to build a sizable advantage in the individual events, Richard made some key tactical moves that relied on some of her swimmers stepping up.

The confidence in her team paid off, as the Wet 'N' Wildcats prevailed in 39 of 60 individual events and came away with a hard-fought 359-314 victory.

SSA's big dogs came through in the clutch, as Curtis Cooper, Logan Anderson, Kyla Reichle, Kristin Copeland, Drew Butler, Maggie Pierce, Amelia Adkins and Craig Cleaver swept all three of their individual events as they have done throughout the summer.

Zach Reichle, Lily Green, Crossan Cooper and Mary Catherine Gossett each won two events. Anna Leigh Gossett, Kolton Clark, Hannah Altonji, Mark Richard, Michael Rossmeier, Shannon Bradbury and MaKalea Kirkland came away with crucial wins.

Among the best races of the evening were come-from-behind wins for second-seeded Kristin Copeland in the 9-10 Girls 50 Breast and Mark Richard in the 13-14 Boys 50 Fly.

Another key move made by Diane Richard was to swim up Drew Butler and Zach Reichle with Cleaver and Rossmeier, allowing the 15-18 Boys to steal the Medley and Freestyle Relays, a pivotal swing of 28 points.

Also scoring for the Wildcats were Ben Gossett, Kolby Clark, Dalton Wood, Megan Vosen, Madison Cole, Caleb Guinn, Jace Guffey, Bethany Dugan, Emily Garner, Alexis Dawson, Cole Cooper, Shonna Browder, Mary Margaret Green, Ansleigh Hand, Clayton Houser, Karah Kirkland, Samantha Hastings, Haley Abril, Hailey Altonji and Christina Richard. This group combined for an important 69 points.

Strong efforts were also turned in by Rex Green, Hudson Tubbs, Clay Giles, Skylar Reichle, Blakely Treece, Elizabeth Guinn, Taylor Bondy, Caroline Potterfield, McKenzie Potter, Rylea Hand, Maddie Gossett, Maggie Robbins, Kami Willis, Libby Fowler, Aidan Tubbs, Lauren Bondy, Laney McMichael, Holly Anderson, Brynn Willis, Staton Robbins, Tadd Hancock, Will Rogers, Tres Sanford, Cole Kirkland, Maryann Jones, Kelli Cleaver, Chloe Wendlick, Grace Butler, Nhi Le, Megan Radon, Amina White, Lexi Mosely, Emma Stewart, Macy Kate Petriske, Julia Webb and Ashley Carter.

The Wildcats are now preparing for the District II Swim Championships, which are Friday and Saturday at Cullman.
