CASA has handicap accessible van

Published March 19, 2009

CASA of Jackson County now has a handicap-accessible van that can be used to transport people to medical treatments and doctor's appointments.

Beverly Waldrop, Director of CASA, said the van was donated to the non-profit organization to be used to transport anyone with a handicap to medical appointments. The van is equipped with a wheelchair lift.

Volunteers are already in place to drive the van. There is room for the driver, a person in a wheelchair and a companion.

There is no charge for this service, but a donation is requested to help offset expenses. Waldrop said in addition to the cost for gas and upkeep on the van, insurance for the van runs over $1,000.

Anyone who would like to set up a time for the van is asked to call CASA at 259-3736.

CASA stands for Care Assurance System for the Aging and Homebound. It is an organization of volunteers who assist disabled and elderly people with a variety of needs, including building wheelchair ramps, doing minor home repairs and chores, and providing transportation and other services. CASA also provides material aid to families in crisis through Reach Services.
