Christmas Charities application process begin

Published September 16, 2009

It might not seem like it, but Christmas is just around the corner.

Christmas Charities of Jackson County is preparing to help those in need during the holiday season. The organization will accept applications for assistance Sept. 28 through Oct. 2 at various locations around the county.

The volunteer organization provides holiday gifts and food for children and the elderly in low-income families. Those in need must meet Housing and Human Services poverty guidelines.

Christmas Charities has served Jackson County for a number of years. The group anticipates more families than ever will be in need of assistance this year with a down economy and increased unemployment.

Applications will be taken in Bridgeport, Dutton, Langston, Pisgah, Scottsboro, Section, Skyline, Stevenson and Woodville.

Applicants must be legal residents of Jackson County and must provide proof of income. When applying representatives of the organization will require proof of income, utility bill, proof of food stamps, Social Security Card and Medicaid cards for all household residents and rent receipt.

The agency receives donations from the community to accommodate the families in need of help. Clubs, school and church groups and individuals are encouraged to adopt one or more families and provide for their needs at Christmas. The organization will accept cash donations for use in helping families who are not adopted.

To meet 2009 HHS poverty guidelines families must not make more than:

1 - $10,830

2 - $14,570

3 - $18,310

4 - $22,050

5 - $25,790

6 - $29,530
