It’s tourney time at Goose Pond

Published March 16, 2010

It’s going to be a big week at Goose Pond Colony.

Golfers and fishermen will fill the recreational complex this week getting in practice and competing in tournaments.

The Ron Marshall Spring Fling Golf Tournament will be held on the Goose Pond Colony course Thursday through Saturday while the McDonald’s Big Bass Splash fishing festival and tournament will blast of Saturday and Sunday from the Goose Pond Tackle and Grill.

The golf tourney annually brings some of the nation’s top junior college golfers, many from the Midwest, to Scottsboro for a three-day season kickoff tournament. More than 100 golfers are expected to take part in this year’s event that is free for spectators. Tee time is 7 a.m. daily.

McDonald’s Big Bass Splash is Alabama’s largest amateur fishing tournament with more than 1,000 participants expected to compete for cashes and prizes in excess of $155,000. The tourney, sponsored by Sealy Outdoors, is making its sixth visit to Jackson County.

“This year’s economic impact to our small businesses is expected to be over $1.3 million during the week,” Greater Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Vice President of Destination Marketing J.P. Parsons said. “This is not a bad return for the $12,000 investment the Chamber spends to bring the tournament to our lake.”

Bass weigh-ins occur every hour on the hour beginning at 7 a.m. both days. It includes divisions for adult anglers and kids.

A “little anglers” division allows kids to weigh their bream, catfish, crappie or whatever they may catch both days of the tournament.

WKEA-FM (K-98) radio will provide tournament reports on an hourly basis.

Spectator admission is free. Everyone in attendance Sunday afternoon can register to win a Stealth ATV in an open drawing.

For more information on the tournament or to register call the Chamber office at 256-259-5000 or Sealy Outdoors at 888-698-2591. Registration can also be completed online at www.sealyoutdoors.com.

A portion of each registration fee benefits the Ronald McDonald Houses and charities.
