Brackets set for 56th Sand Mtn. Tourney

The brackets are set for the 2009 Sand Mountain Tournament.
Local squads North Sand Mountain, Pisgah and Section will compete in the tournament — the 56th edition — Dec. 26-30 at the DeKalb County Schools Coliseum in Rainsville.
Pisgah is hosting this year's tournament. The brackets were finalized after a seeding vote by the coaches Wednesday night.
Only nine teams will compete in the tournament. It expanded to 10 teams four years ago to include Asbury, a 1A school in Marshall County which had just made the move from a junior high to a high school. Asbury has decided to no longer participate.
In the varsity girls bracket, Class 2A No. 6 North Sand Mountain took the No. 1 seed, while 2A No. 5 Section is the No. 2 seed. Plainview, ranked fifth in Class 4A, is the third-seed, followed by Fyffe at No. 4, Pisgah at No. 5, Geraldine at No. 6, Ider at No. 7, Sylvania No. at 8 and Crossville at No. 9.
The varsity boys tournament features five teams currently ranked in the Alabama Sports Writers Association's prep polls.
Class 2A No. 1-ranked Section is the top-seed, while Jackson County rival Pisgah, ranked sixth in 3A, is the second-seed.
Fyffe, the No. 4-ranked team in 2A, is the No. 3 seed, while 3A ninth-ranked Sylvania is the No. 4-seed and 3A No. 10 Crossville is the No. 5-seed. Geraldine is the sixth-seed, while Ider is the seventh-seed, Plainview the eighth-seed and NSM the ninth-seed.

Dec. 28
VG: Plainview vs. Geraldine, 10 a.m.
VB: Fyffe vs. Geraldine, 11:30 a.m.
VG: Fyffe vs. Pisgah, 1 p.m.
VB: Sylvania vs. Crossville, 2:30 p.m.
VG: Section vs. Ider, 4 p.m.
VB: Pisgah vs. Ider, 5:30 p.m.
VG: NSM vs. Sylvania/Crossville winner, 7 p.m.
VB: Section vs. Plainview/NSM winner, 8:30 p.m.
Dec. 29
VG: Semifinals, 3 and 6 p.m.
VB: Semifinals, 4:30 and 7:30 p.m.
Dec. 30
VG: Championship Game, 6 p.m.
VB: Championship Game, 7:30 p.m.
