Necklaus chosen to serve as reviewer for 2009
Published June 25, 2009
Training Officer Gene Necklaus of the Scottsboro Fire Department has been selected to participate in the 2009 Assistance to Firefighters Grant as a technical evaluation reviewer.
Necklaus, one of 120 panelists, was invited by the United States Fire Administration and Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
“I’m looking forward to it,” said Necklaus. “It’s a great opportunity to be able to work with a grant program that has been beneficial to Scottsboro and other area fire departments in the past.”
Necklaus said DHS anticipates the 2009 Assistance to Firefighters Grant will consider $1.1 billion in applications and award $565 million to fire departments large and small, as appropriated by Congress.
“I’m looking forward to the chance to participate in the other side of the grant process, along with networking with fire service people from different parts of the country,” said Necklaus.
Necklaus added that he hoped to learn more about writing grants, which will only benefit Scottsboro.
“It’s going to be an educational trip,” said Necklaus, who will travel to Baltimore July 12-17.
In the past, Scottsboro Fire Department and many other departments in the county have been awarded funding for equipment and vehicles through this same program.
“While we applied for these same grants this year,” said Necklaus, “the Fire Administration puts great effort in keeping integrity in the grant process. I don’t imagine I will see an application from any department in Alabama.”
