Road survival

Published November 19, 2009

The Section Lions boys basketball team's third win of the season didn't come as easily as the first two.

Section survived a battle with county rival Skyline Tuesday night, taking a 72-69 victory in by far its toughest test of the season.

The Lions (3-0) trailed at halftime and needed to make six free throws during the final minute to escape with the win.

"That was a fun game," said Section coach Ronnie McCarver. "We needed a close game. It was good for us. We came in here to a hostile environment and (Skyline) was ready to go."

First-year Skyline coach Derek Wynn, a Section alum who was McCarver's assistant coach last season, said the Vikings showed signs of progress in the setback.

"A loss is a loss," Wynn said, "but I'm really proud of this bunch. We've still got a lot to learn, but we played well against a good team. Hopefully later on down the line when we get into area play this will help us."

Section led by three points at the start of the fourth quarter, but Skyline battled its way into lead when Jesse Woodall drilled a 3-pointer with 2:21 to play. But Jimmy Maruhn answered with a trey 14 seconds later to give the Lions the lead for good.

Chance McCarver was 4-of-4 at the foul line and Clint Ryan hit two free throws inside the final 50 seconds to seal Section’s win.

Ryan finished with 27 points and 10 rebounds despite missing a majority of the fourth quarter due to foul trouble. Chance McCarver hit five 3-pointers and closed with 21 points, while Jeffrey Johnson added 14 points and six rebounds. Maruhn finished with nine points.

Jacob McClennan led four Skyline players in double figures with 21 points, while fellow freshman Travis Sisk had 16 points and seven assists. Nick Talley contributed 13 points and nine rebounds while Woodall chipped in 11 points and five boards.

The hoops rivalry between the schools has been one-sided for the past several years, but a young Skyline squad seemed determined to change that Tuesday.

The Vikings (2-2) took a 10-8 lead after a defensive-oriented first quarter and trailed for only 14 seconds in the first half before going to the locker room with a 29-26 halftime lead.

Section shook off its first-half shooting troubles early in the third quarter, as Chance McCarver knocked down three 3-pointers in 1:11 span to give the Lions the lead.

Section's largest advantage was 44-37 after two free throws from Johnson, but the Vikings eventually tied it at 48-all on a bucket by Sisk. Another trey from Chance McCarver with 15 seconds left in the third gave the Lions a 51-48 advantage heading to the final quarter.

"We finally started making some shots," Ronnie McCarver said. "In the first half we were awful offensively. A lot of that was (Skyline). Derek's got them going. He's doing a super job."
