National recognition
Published January 20, 2010
People gathered inside Dutton Town Hall Monday night to hear a big thanks from town officials for their help in creating a great night out for their community.
Mayor Bryan Stewart and the town of Dutton held an appreciation dinner Monday for individuals and groups who helped sponsor this year's National Night Out, an August event of community celebration designed to be a “night off” for crime and drugs.
The town recently received its second national award for its participation in the National Night Out program. The town was recognized for “outstanding participation in America’s Night Out Against Crime,” a nod that Stewart said honors the best of the best in communities with a population of 15,000 residents or fewer. The town of Dutton's estimated population is 311 citizens.
Stewart said the town has also won a Municipal Achievement Award from the Alabama League of Municipalities in 2007.
This year’s National Night Out event in Dutton was the sixth the community has held. Monday night's dinner was to honor sponsors of the event and people who help make the night a reality each year.
“We just felt it was time to get the group of people who made the night possible together and say they’re appreciated,” Stewart said.
Individuals and groups honored Monday night included Dutton Community Court, Upper Sand Mountain Parish, Harbin Ford, Dutton Fire Department, Jackson County Sheriff's Department, Jackson County Shriner's Unit, Dutton United Methodist Church. Moriah's Christian Children's Home, Target, Dale Crawford, Judicial Correction Services, Section Lions Club, Scottsboro Circuit of United Methodist Churches, Air Evac Services and Dutton Community Library.
The National Night Out program is administered by the National Association of Town Watch and locally, the annual event in Dutton is sponsored by Target.
Kelli Jordan, sales floor team leader from the Huntsville Target store, and Marilyn Irons, ETL assets protection from Huntsville came to show their support Monday.
Jordan said some 450 people attended the event this year. Speakers and presenters at the National Night Out included Curtis Summerville, a public information officer for the Alabama State Troopers, the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, Blue Cross Blue Shield and Target. The town was also able to pack 235 backpacks with school supplies to give to community residents.
Jordan said the Target store had sought a community to partner with and the two groups found each other. She said the store will continue to partner with the town of Dutton for future National Night Out events.
"We just have a lot of fun with Dutton," she said.
The seventh annual event is already scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2010.
Stewart said he's proud of the town for working with the program. He said his main goal is to "put as many uniformed heroes in front of young people to promote good lives — not lives of crime and drugs."
