Gretchen B. Smith
Gretchen B. Smith, age 86, died Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at her daughter's home in Scottsboro.
Born in Spring City, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Elbert and Barbara Sheehan Barton. Gretchen was a graduate of the Spring City High School. She retired from TVA's Kingston Steam Plant as a clerk. Gretchen was a lifelong member of the Spring City United Methodist Church where she taught in the nursery for many years. She was an avid football and basketball fan, especially the Lady Vols and U.T. football.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Denton "Prof" Smith, daughter Pat Smith, sisters Pearl Woodfin and Helen Douglas and brothers James, William, John and Harold Barton.
Survivors include her daughter Terri (David) Gann of Scottsboro; sister Doris Ann Cameron of Spring City, grandchildren Scott Gann of Troy and Ashlie Gann of Mobile, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Spring City United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dale Wyrick officiating. Interment will follow in the Spring City Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Spring City United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 58, Spring City, TN., 37381.
Vaughn Funeral Home, Spring City, is in charge of arrangements.
