Local cheer squad to compete at Disney World
Published November 15, 2008
With the economy becoming more uncertain every day, fund-raising is tough right now. Sometimes, it takes some creativity to bring in needed donations.
In order to raise the money needed to attend the AmeriCheer International Competition at Walt Disney World in March, the students at Shasta's Cheer Center came up with a unique way bring in donations. They decided to host their inaugural Holiday Cheer Cheerleading and Dance Competition as a fund-raiser.
Bringing together dance and cheer teams from all over the southeast, the competition is set for Sunday, Dec. 7, from 3 until 6 p.m. at the Scottsboro Rec*Com. All proceeds will go into a fund to pay for the cheerleaders to attend the competition at Walt Disney World.
Shasta's Cheer Center, which is owned and operated by Shasta Stinnett, has been in business for 10 years, and this is the fourth year she has sent a team to the AmeriCheer Competition.
Dru Beattie, whose daughter is a student at Shasta's Cheer Center, said the center gives her daughter, who was involved in gymnastics when they lived in Florida, a chance to stay active in her favorite sport.
Beattie said the center offers the students experience in physical fitness, team work, conducting themselves in public and the importance of practice. Shasta aslo requires all of her students to bring in their progress reports and report cards to make sure they are keeping up with their peers academically, and if some fall behind in their studies she holds study sessions at the center, Beattie said.
"These kids have worked very hard to get to this point," Beattie said. "This is a reward for their efforts."
Approximately 25 members of the Shasta's Senior All Star Squad and a few youth squad members will be attending the AmeriCheer event.
Beattie said each student is required to pay $450 to $500 to cover their entry fee and accommodations at Walt Disney World. The money raised from the Holiday Cheer competition will go strictly to help students. Any parent who wants to go must pay his or her own way, Beattie said.
K-98 is offering to set up a live remote at the Rec*Com on the day of the competition for two hours and emcee the event if the cheer center can bring in 10 sponsors at $135 each, Beattie said. All sponsors will get 10 30-second commercials during the week of the competition and will be mentioned during the broadcast and each time the competition is mentioned.
Anyone who is interested in becoming a sponsor is asked to call Beattie at 259-3035 or Shasta's Cheer Center at 575-0256.
Teams from all over the southeast have been invited to participate. Any dance or cheer team is invited to participate. Early registration for the event is Nov. 15, but teams will be accepted after that date.
Shasta's squads will only be performing as an exhibition, not in the actual competition. All other teams will be competing for the Holiday Cheer title.
The public is invited to watch this gathering of talented dance and cheer teams. Admission prices are $10 for adults, $5 for youth and no charge for ages 3 and under.
