Students to make up weather days

Published February 25, 2010

Jackson County Superintendent Ken Harding addressed weather days at the school board’s regular meeting Tuesday night.

Harding said he’s gotten a lot of phone calls about the weather days and if the students will have to make up time during spring break.

Jackson County Schools have closed for three full days for the weather since coming back to classes in January.

Students will attend classes on March 11 and 12 — weather days built into the school calendar — to make up two days. Harding said now there’s only one day the school has not scheduled to make up.

He said the additional day will probably be made up at the end of the school year, if the system does not have to cancel classes again this semester.

“If we wind up with more, we’ll go into AEA (week),” Harding said, adding the system would not have students attend more than two days during spring break.

The board accepted low bids from IT Solutions on both the network maintenance services for the 18 system schools and the computer network equipment maintenance.

Board President Brenda Brown motioned to accept the bids from the company, which is who the school system currently uses for the services. IT Solutions’ bid for network maintenance was $50 per hour and $215,228.40 for the equipment maintenance.

Harding said both items are dependent on E-Rate funding. E-Rates are federal dollars school systems can apply for based on certain technology items that are eligible. School systems are awarded the discounts based on the number of free and reduced--price lunches it provides for its students — a number than can vary each year. Jackson County Schools will apply for an 80 percent discount this year.

Board member Elizabeth Cooley seconded Brown’s motion and the board voted 4-0 to approve the item.

In other business, the board:

• approved its board member training policy.

• approved an overnight trip for the North Jackson High School and Pisgah High School BETA Clubs to attend the state convention on April 1-2 in Birmingham.

• received a job description for a Fixed Assest/LSA clerk position. The item will lay over until the March meeting.

• approved the textbook committee and its recommendation of textbook adoptions. Harding said this year’s books were in technical education, health and physical education.

• approved summer feeding sites at Bridgeport Middle, North Sand Mountain High, Rosalie Elementary, Section High, Stevenson Elementary and Woodville High schools. The sites will provide free lunch for any child under age 18 in the community during the month of June.

• approved payment bills and accounts for February.

• approved January financial reports.

• approved family medical leaves for Rena Hutchinson, a teacher at Bridgeport Elementary, and Pam Ray, a bus driver at North Jackson High School.

• approved the resignations of Deborah Breland, a special education secretary at the central office, effective May 1; Bettye Guffey, a fixed asset/LSA clerk at the central office, effective July 1; and Jessica Reeves as English/literacy teacher at Section High School, effective Feb. 1.

• approved the employments of Jessica Reeves to fill in a leave of absence as languages arts teacher at Pisgah High School Feb. 3 through May 31; Tiffany Lawson as English/literacy teacher at Section High March 1 through May 31; and Randy Miller as countywide special services aide from Feb. 22 to May 31.

• approved the transer of Tammy Moore from secretary at the Earnest Pruett Center of Technology to special education secretary at the central office, effective May .
