Phillips named new chief deputy
Published June 9, 2009
Jackson County Sheriff Dennis Miller announced Monday he has promoted Chuck Phillips to the position of chief deputy.
Phillips fills the position left vacant by the retirement of Doyle York last month.
"Chuck has done a good job for me," said Miller. "Appointing him as my chief deputy is the best thing I could do for the sheriff's office."
Phillips said he appreciated Miller's trust and faith in him to do the job.
"I am going to try to be the best chief deputy this office has ever had," said Phillips. "Sheriff Miller has been good to me. He has done a great job serving Jackson County as its sheriff."
Phillips, a 1978 graduate of Oneonta High School, began his career in law enforcement at the Scottsboro Police Department in 1982.
Six years later, he joined the sheriff's office under then-Sheriff Paul Mount. Phillips served as road deputy his first six months, then rose in the ranks to investigator.
Under Sheriff Mike Wells, Phillips served as chief investigator for almost 16 years.
After Wells retired, Phillips lost his bid for sheriff to Miller in 2006. Despite the loss, Miller named Phillips a captain in 2007, where he was supervisor over the narcotics division.
By March 2009, Phillips was once again supervisor over all investigations, narcotics and criminal.
He said he will continue in that capacity as chief deputy.
"I am going to continue to work hard and diligently as I have the past 27 years to assist and protect the citizens of Jackson County," said Phillips.
Phillips and his wife, Kim, have five children and one grandson.
