Veterans to be honored during program at SJHS

Retired U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Frank Libutti will be the featured speaker at Veterans Day ceremonies Friday at Scottsboro Junior High School.

Libutti, a native of Huntington, Long Island, N.Y. was the commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Pacific/Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific/Commander U.S. Marine Corps Bases, Pacific headquartered at Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii when he retired in October 2001. Since then, he has worked with the New York City Police Department, as Under Secretary for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and is currently CEO of Pegasus Global Solutions, LLC, an electronic warfare company.

Libutti specializes in counterterrorism, homeland security issues and international affairs.

Ceremonies begin at 9 a.m. in the gymnasium at the school. The Scottsboro Junior High School band will perform patriotic songs, the Scottsboro High School chorus will lead the National Anthem and Erin Burnett will sing America the Beautiful.

Veterans of all branches of service will be recognized during the ceremony and videos will be shown detailing the history and heroics of American servicemen and women.

“It’s always a nice ceremony and it’s a good way to honor those who have served and to recognize those who currently serve our country,” Hal Luse, principal of the school, said. “We invite all veterans and the public to attend.”

Libutti is a 1966 graduate of the Citadel. After completing the Marine Corps Officer Candidate Program he was commissioned a second lieutenant. He served in Vietnam with the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines.

He also served in Italy, at Headquarters Marine Corps, Washington D.C. and Camp Pendleton, Ca. during his career.

General Libutti received the Defense Distinguished Service Medal while serving as the Assistant Chief of Staff C/J-5, United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command, United States Forces Korea and as Commander, Marine Forces Korea. He held this position from June 20, 1996 until July 20, 1997. He was promoted to his current rank of Lieutenant General on July 10, 1997.

General Libutti's personal decorations include: Defense Distinguished Service Medal (first award), the Silver Star Medal; Defense Superior Service Medal with two bronze oak leaf clusters; Legion of Merit with gold star; Purple Heart with two gold stars; Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal; Republic of Korea Chonsu Medal: and the Combat Action Ribbon. General Libutti was also presented with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star, by the Emperor of Japan for service dedicated to the security of Japan and the mutual cooperation between Japan and the United States.
