Region break
Published September 24, 2009
Local high school football teams get a break from region play this week.
On the schedule during this non-region week is a clash between two county rivals, a big-time matchup at North Jackson and two Homecoming contests.
The week's headliner is North Jackson hosting Fort Payne Friday night.
The Class 4A No. 5-ranked Chiefs (4-0) have cruised to easy victories the first four weeks of the season, but expect a stern test from 5A Fort Payne (3-1).
Tonight's meeting is the 16th between the schools but just the second in the past eight years. The teams, who met every year from 1988-2001, revived their series last season.
Fort Payne won 35-14 to snap an eight-game losing streak to the Chiefs.
Another recently revived rivalry will be played this week, as Section (0-4) visits Pisgah (3-1) Friday.
It's the 31st meeting between the schools, with Pisgah holding a 21-9 series advantage. But the Lions took last year's matchup, rallying from a 15-0 deficit to defeat Pisgah 19-15. Last year's meeting was the first between the schools since 2003.
Homecoming will be celebrated at Scottsboro and North Sand Mountain Friday.
Scottsboro (0-4) hosts the Bulter Rebels (0-4) for a second straight Homecoming contest. The Wildcats defeated the Rebels 45-12 last year and hold a 7-6 lead in the all-time series. Scottsboro has won two straight against Butler.
At Higdon, NSM (1-3) welcomes Gadsden-area private school Coosa Christian for Homecoming. The Bison and Conquerors played last season for the first time, with NSM coming away with a 35-25 road win.
The Woodville Panthers and the Skyline Vikings hit the road this week.
Woodville (0-4) makes the short drive to Huntsville to play Class 2A Westminster Christian.
It's the second game in five days for the Panthers, who lost at Collinsville Monday in a game that was delayed three days because of rampant sickness among Woodville's players.
Skyline (0-4) makes the week's longest road trip, as it travels to Jacksonville to play Jacksonville Christian Academy.
In last season's meeting, JCA pulled out a 42-34 victory at Stevenson Middle School.
