Wildcats bounce back

Published November 30, 2009

The Scottsboro girls basketball team bounced back from a dismal outing against Arab with a solid three-game performance in its Wildcat Classic last week.

Scottsboro went 2-1 during the event, which included a victory over Boaz in the third-place game.

The Wildcats beat Butler to begin the tournament and played well in a semifinal loss to Class 6A Hazel Green.

"The whole tournament was definitely a turnaround from the Arab game," said Scottsboro coach Jerry Kirkland, whose team made just 21 percent of its shot attempts during a 48-25 loss to the Knights on Nov. 23. "I'm real proud of the team."

The Wildcats secured the third-place finish with a 68-54 win over Boaz in the consolation game, avenging a 68-50 loss to the Pirates on Nov. 17.

Scottsboro built an 18-11 lead after one quarter and was in front 33-28 at halftime and 50-42 after three quarters.

"We got up at halftime and maintained (the lead)," Kirkland said. "That was a really outstanding win."

Tyris Branford led the Wildcats with 28 points, while Whitney Fielder added 15 and Rachel Gass chipped in 14. Peyton Higgins led Boaz with 16.

Scottsboro (4-4) opened tournament play with a 59-44 victory over Butler.

The Wildcats led 19-7, 38-22 and 53-27 at the quarter breaks.

Branford and Fielder led the scoring for Scottsboro, totaling 17 and 15 points respectively. Mardaisha Derrick paced Butler with 17 points.

The Wildcats' lone tournament loss came to eventual champion Hazel Green.

The Trojans led 16-13, 29-21 and 38-26 at the quarter breaks on the way to the 56-45 win.

Lawanda Carter led Scottsboro with 12 points while Jeana Davis added seven. Katie Lipham scored 16 to lead Hazel Green, which defeated Buckhorn in the championship game.

Scottsboro travels to No. 5 -ranked Fort Payne tonight for a Class 5A Area 14 contest.
