Scottsboro BOE eliminates positions

Published May 21, 2009

The Scottsboro Board of Education approved several items that will be in effect for the new school year starting in August.

The board voted to accept Superintendent Dr. Judy Berry’s recommendation to eliminate the position of transition job coach at Scottsboro High School.

Berry said the transition job coach is a state position which is supposed to be funded 100 percent by the state. However, in the last few years, the amount of funding provided by the state for the position has become less and less each year with the local school system picking up the remainder of the cost.

After speaking with the state agency responsible for funding the job coach, Berry said it is unlikely the school system would receive any money to pay for the position. Berry said she hopes the system will have money in the future to fund a transition job coach, but at this time, there is no money available.

The board also awarded bids for the following items to Dixie Store Fixtures and Sales Co. Inc. of Birmingham, pending approval of receipt of ARRA NSLP Equipment Grant funds:

• A walk-in cooler and freezer for Nelson Elementary School for $70,000;

• A serving line for Scottsboro Junior High School for $21,126;

• A combination oven and steamer for Collins Elementary School and Scottsboro Junior High School in the amount of $15,600 each.

The board also approved the purchase of the Microsoft School Agreement at a cost not to exceed $45,000 for the 2009-10 school year.

The board also approved out-of-state travel for Kristi Clifton and the cosmetology class’s Skills USA state officers to attend the Skills USA National Conference in Kansas City, Mo. on June 21-27.
