Central Alabama charged to the lead after Day 1 of the ninth annual Ron Marshall Spring Fling junior college golf tournament at Goose Pond Colony on Thursday.
Central, located in Alexander City, posted an opening round team score of 277, giving it a six-shot lead over second place Meridian (Miss.).
Walters State (Tenn.) was third at 286 while John A. Logan (Ill.) was fourth at 287. Darton College (Ga.) and Red Lake (Ill.) were tied for fifth at 291.
Players from Alabama schools led 14 golfers who turned in rounds under par on Thursday.
Faulkner State’s Tyler Brown and Central Alabama's Paul Harris shared the individual lead after Round 1 with a 5-under par 67.
Central Alabama's Lewis Gruber was third with a 4-under 68 while Faulkner’s Jared Burelson and Central’s Zach Primavera were tied for fourth with Meridian's Garrett Westbrook at 3-under.
Central's Barrett Milam shot a 1-over 73 and was tied for 22nd overall while Jud Milam was 4-over and tied for 42nd.
