Sand Mountain National ready for series
Published July 29, 2010
Sand Mountain National 9-10-year-old all-star coach Corey Tinker doesn’t expect his team to be overwhelmed later this week when it takes the field for the Dixie Softball World Series at Vancleave, Miss.
Tinker said the members of his squad have played enough games throughout their young careers that the Series atmosphere shouldn’t be a factor.
“The butterflies and stuff I’m sure will all be there before they get started, but I expect them to do well,” he said.
Opening ceremonies are set for Friday, and the tournament begins Saturday.
The Nationals, who feature players from Ider, are 7-0 in all-star competition, including a 4-0 mark in the state tournament. The Nationals wrapped up the state championship with a 5-4 victory over Hartselle in the final July 19 at Enterprise.
“They are tickled to death,” Tinker said of the Series berth. “It’s pretty exciting. It’s not something that happens every year, and we’re going to try to have a really good time and enjoy ourselves and play some ball.
Tinker gave his squad a week off after the state tournament.
The Nationals returned to practice Monday, and Tinker said his player looked “real sharp.” He said the team has also been busy fund-raising for the trip.
The roster includes Shelby Hawkins, Hannah Culpepper, Savannah Hood, Caitlin Tinker, Nip McCallister, Morgan Flynn, Baylee Eason, Deanna Meadows, Rachel Pike, Haley Blansit, Jessica Lee and Kelly Hale.
Hawkins, Hood, Tinker, Eason and Pike reached base safely in all four games at Enterprise.
Corey Tinker said pitching and defense have been the keys to his team’s success through district and state.
“I hope the last game we played at state is what’s fixing to come in the World Series,” he said. “We finally started hitting the ball in the last game … and I hope that carries over.”
