Lions hang with large schools

OXFORD — The Section varsity girls’ cross country tam hung tough with some of the sport's Class 6A powers on Saturday.
The 2A Lions finished fourth among an eight-team field at the Oxford Invitational that consisted of six Class 6A squads.
Only Hoover (29 points), Pelham (43) and Oxford (80) bested Section, which closed with 127 points. Paul W. Bryant High School of Tuscaloosa was fifth with 128 points. The only other non-6A team, 3A Pleasant Valley, finished seventh.
Robin Wynn paced the Section contingent by running to a 17th-place finish in the 5K race with a time of 22:56.61.
Taylor Adams followed closely in 21st place (23:20.09), while Jordan McCarver was 36th (25:02.76), Samantha McCollough 40th (25:25.83) and Jazzy Moore 47th (26:23.57). Jessica McCollough finished finished 62nd (30:01.63) for Section, which also got a 71st-place finish from Cera Gifford (33:27.98).
In the varsity boys race, Section's Kelly Gray notched a 94th-place finish (28:32.02).
The meet was Section's final regular season event. The Lions have two weeks to train for the Class 2A Section 5 meet Nov. 5 at Scottsboro. The top three teams at sectionals and the top six runners not on the roster of a top three finishing team qualify for the state meet Nov. 14 at Oakville Indian Mounds State Park.
