Panthers fall to Gaston
Published October 24, 2009
It’s been a long tough season for the Woodville Panthers.
Life didn’t get any easier Friday night as the Gaston Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in claiming an easy 72-12 win at Madison County Junior High School in Gurley.
The Bulldogs, who had already laid claim to the region championship, improved to 7-2 overall, 6-1 in 1A Region 6.
Woodville fell to 0-9 and 0-7.
“Gaston played with a lot of class,” Woodville head coach James Pair said. “We played a real good football team. They got up on us early and played a lot of kids.” Pair felt his team, loaded with underclassmen, continued to improve. “Our young guys played hard. We’re getting better,” Pair said. “We’re doing the little things well, we’re hustling and are getting in the right place.”
Grant Ball led the Woodville offensive attack with 131 yards rushing on 20 carries and a touchdown. Brandon Houston carried seven times for 29 yards and a score, Andrew Harper eight times for 20 yards and Brandon Bingham had four yards on four attempts.
Ball was 2 of 8 passing with both catches going to Houston.
Ball also led the Panther defense with 10 tackles. Thaddeus Payton had four stops and an assist. Houston, Zachary Evans and Jake Baugh each had three tackles and an assist. “We’re getting to the football better on defense. Our kids are making small improvements week-to-week,” Pair said.
The Panthers will hit the road to face 2A county rival Section to end the 2009 season next Friday night. The Lions are also looking to claim their first win of the year after falling, 28-0, to North Sand Mountain Friday.
Pair knows his team will be an underdog against the 2A Lions. He says Section has more players, more size and experience on its side. “We’re going to send our guys out there and we know they’re going to play hard,” Pair said. “We’re going to come to play and let the chips fall where they may.”
