Lackey out as hospital CEO

Published April 2, 2009

Tom Lackey, who served in various capacities during a 23 year career, is out as Chief Executive Officer of the Jackson County Health Care Authority.

Lackey resigned earlier this week after serving as CEO for 10 years. JCHCA includes Highlands Medical Center, a 170-bed facility in Scottsboro, Highlands Health and Rehab and Cumberland Health and Rehab in Bridgeport. The authority also provides medical services through Highlands Home Health, Highlands Ambulance Service, and Highlands Occupational Medicine Center.

Kim Bryant, who has served as the Authority's Chief Operating Officer for the past 10 years, was named Wednesday morning to replace Lackey in an interim capacity.

"These are challenging times in health care," Authority Board Chairman Derrell Massey said in announcing Bryant's appointment. "We look forward to Kim's leadership in continuing the progress that Highlands Medical Center and the entire healthcare authority has made in recent years. Our Board will be working diligently on selecting a permanent CEO."

"I appreciate the confidence the board of directors has placed in me," Bryant said. "I look forward to the healthcare challenges and opportunities facing our organization."

Lackey was named CEO on Jan. 7, 1999 after serving for a time in an interim capacity. He also served as administrator at North Jackson Hospital and, what was then known as Jackson County Hospital for a time.

He took over at a time when the Authority had been embroiled in turmoil for several years prior to and after the dismissal of James Mason on Aug. 16, 1997. Dan Armour, a retired health care administrator served as CEO for a time.

Massey said the JCHCA Board was grateful for Lackey's service.

"Tom inherited a difficult situation back in 1999. Since then he has been at the helm when JCHCA has seen significant growth and improved financial performance. We appreciate his contributions and wish him only the best."

Bryant began his healthcare career in 1979. He previously held management and administrative positions with Carraway Medical Center, Baptist Health Systems and the Humana Corporation.

"I look forward to working with our medical staff, our employees and our board of directors. We are so fortunate to have outstanding people and professionals within all these groups," Bryant said.

Chris Gulley is vice chairman of the JCHCA. Doyle Robertson serves as its secretary-treasurer. Other members of the board include: Joey Carroll, Larry Dean, Dr. Durwood Hodges, Perry Kinsey, R.D. Mitchell and Marty Vernon.

Attempts to reach Lackey, who presently serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Greater Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, Wednesday were unsuccessful.
