Scottsboro impressive in win over Plainview
Published November 21, 2009
Scottsboro's 2009-10 Hambrick Hall debut put a victory in the win column for the SHS boys basketball team.
After starting the season with a pair of tough road losses, Scottsboro scored its first win during its home opener Thursday with a 81-71 triumph over visiting Plainview.
Scottsboro jumped ahead 12-2 during a dominant first quarter in which it scored 30 points, built a 17-point lead, made 15 of 16 free throw attempts and forced 12 Plainview turnovers with a swarming full-court press.
It was a nice start for a team that struggled in losses at Albertville and Boaz.
"Instead of playing according to somebody else," said Scottsboro coach Brad Dudley, "we established the tempo and how the game was going to be played."
The Wildcats held a 44-34 lead at halftime after a foul-riddled second period in which the teams combined to shoot 23 free throws.
Scottsboro's lead grew to 56-41 after a basket by Ben Word at the midway point of the third quarter, but Plainview (0-1) ended the period with a 12-2 run to pull within 58-53 entering the fourth.
But every time the Bears threatened a comeback, Scottsboro answered, whether with a clutch shot or precision accuracy at the free throw line.
The Wildcats made 16 of their 20 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter and made 43 of 57 tries from the line for the game.
Plainview got as close as four at 66-62 on Colby Williams' 3-pointer with 2:37 remaining.
But Scottsboro countered with two Jake Lewis free throws and a basket from Word. The Wildcats then outscored the Bears 11-5 during the final two minutes.
"I didn't want the game to get close," Dudley said, "but winning like that was probably better for us than a comfortable win."
Four Wildcats scored in double figures, led by Word's 23 points, which included a stellar 11-of-12 performance at the foul line. Lewis added 20 points for the Wildcats, while Caleb Brown and Deuntae Johnson each scored 13.
Jacob Crowell had 18 points and Bryar Buchanan 17 for Plainview, which made just 12 of 23 free throw attempts and committed 31 turnovers.
Dudley said his team still has some improving to do, but was pleased with the overall effort of his entire squad. "I want to play up and down and go deep on the bench," he said. "Jake and Caleb were solid tonight, Ben was big, Deuntae was really good on the front of the press, and Blake (Paradise) played real well before getting in foul trouble. We had guys off then bench like Carson Hutchins, Joe Chubb, Chase Sims and Brett Thornell that really helped us when they were in there."
