Man injured in car crash with deputies in pur

Published December 22, 2009

Jackson County Sheriff's investigators are examining a car chase Friday night involving a 36-year-old Paint Rock man.

According to Chief Deputy Chuck Phillips, deputies John McCrary and Jeremiah McCormick were patrolling Alabama Highway 65 in Paint Rock Valley when they spotted a Jeep Cherokee parked on the side of the road.

“They went back to check on the vehicle,” Phillips said. “At that time, the vehicle pulled away, and they observed smoke coming from it.”

McCrary and McCormick followed the vehicle before it stopped at a residence.

“When they got out to approach the vehicle, the driver took off again on Highway 65,” Phillips said. “Smoke was getting worse inside the interior.”

Phillips said the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed and driving recklessly when he lost control going around a curve.

“He drove the vehicle through a fence, through a field and crashed into a pile of bushes,” Phillips said.

Phillips said the vehicle was on fire, and deputies located what appeared to be a one-pot meth lab inside.

A local fire department and ambulance service was called to the scene. The driver, a Paint Rock man, was transported to Huntsville Hospital for minor injuries.

Phillips declined to release the man’s name, pending an arrest.

“Charges are pending for traffic violations and Manufacturing of a Controlled Substance,” said Phillips. “The case is still under investigation.”
