City council to hold special meeting
Published November 25, 2009
The Scottsboro City Council will hold a special meeting on the fifth monday of the month next week.
The special meeting will be to approve a bid for a new garbage truck for the city's solid waste department.
Solid Waste supervisor Eddie Blizzard said the department needs to replace one of its trucks as soon as possible.
“We’ve had one to break down,” Blizzard said. “Rather than paying the cost to repair, we’re asking for a new one.”
Blizzard said the estimate to repair the old truck, which would need a new engine, would cost at least $20,000.
He added that his department was planning on purchasing a new truck as soon as the Federal Emergency Management Agency money arrives from the April storms.
“We need a new truck now,” he said. “Right now, we’re running only one truck, and it’s running 16 hours a day. If we have any kind of breakdown, we’re in trouble.”
On Monday, the city council approved putting a new truck out for bid. Next week, they will open bids and approve or disapprove.
In other business Monday, the council:
• approved a liquor license to Geno’s after new ownership took over.
• approved a one-time pay raise for city employees. Full-time employees will get $150, while part-time employees will get $75 and temporary part-time employees will get $50.
• approved a donation of $210.55 to the Jackson County SPCA to cover landfill fees.
• approved a resolution for an airport grant of $2.5 million. The city’s cost for the grant will be $64,784.
• announced the Dec. 7 work session has been moved to Dec. 14 prior to the regular meeting.
• City Clerk Cathy O”Shields announced two vacancies on the Zoning Adjustment and Appeals Board. Requests for board membership must be submitted to Scottsboro City Hall by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 18.
