Jones assumes state VFW post
Published June 13, 2009
The Veterans of Foreign War of the United States, Department of Alabama, announced the installation of their 2009-2010 State Commander, George Jones of Scottsboro during the group's state convention last week.
Commander Jones had moved up to the Commander’s position in February of this year due to the resignation of the previous commander. He will now serve a one-year term, which will end on June 6, 2010.
Commander Jones has been active with local Scottsboro VFW post 6073, having served five terms, from 2002-2007, as Commander. He also served as VFW District 1 Commander from 2005-2006 and was elected State Jr. Vice Commander in 2007 and as the State Sr. Vice Commander in 2008. Commander Jones has received numerous recognitions and awards from the Veterans of Foreign Wars, to include national All American Commander and Department All-State Commander.
Commander Jones earned his eligibility to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving in Viet Nam from 1968-1969. Prior to his tour of duty in Vietnam, Commander Jones graduated from the U.S. Army Warrant Officer helicopter flight training program at Ft Rucker, Ala. in 1967.
Commander Jones logged almost 2000 hours of combat flight time during his tour, earning him the Army Air Medal for Heroism with 29 oak leaf clusters. He returned to Ft. Rucker as an instructor pilot until his discharge in 1970. He then went to work for the Federal Aviation Administration as an air traffic controller.
Commander Jones said his claim to fame came in 1981, when he and 12,000 other air traffic controllers were fired by President Reagan during the PATCO Strike. From 1983 to 1994, Commander Jones worked for Stone and Webster Engineering Co. as a Quality Engineer. S&W brought him and his family to Scottsboro in 1992 for the Bellefonte Nuclear Plant reassessment. In 1994, Commander Jones decided on a career change and entered into the transportation business. He is currently co-owner of a trucking business, Meteor Express, and a truck repair and service shop, Goosepond Truck Service. Both businesses are located on Goose Pond Island in Scottsboro.
Commander Jones has four children (2 currently attending school at Auburn) and two grandchildren. His wife Deonna (Smith) is a long time resident of Scottsboro.
