Cats continue to show out

Published March 10, 2010

It was another stellar weekend for the Scottsboro High School track and field teams.

Scottsboro participated in the Alabama A&M Bulldog Relays Saturday in Huntsville, and SHS athletes secured some lofty finishes. The meet held events in both high school and college divisions.

Team scores were not kept during the event, but Scottsboro coach Benny Wright knows his teams would've fared well if they had. He was again pleased with the effort of both teams.

"The girls again had an excellent meet with some of their times better than the college women's," Wright said. "The boys improved in some areas but we still have injuries and sickness that has hampered the team. We still need to get healthy and continue to improve before sectionals and state."

Scottsboro captured first place in nine varsity girls events.

Adria Hill won three individual events, taking the top spot in the 100-meter hurdles race (15.33 seconds), the 200-meter dash (25.54) and the triple jump event (32 feet, 10 inches). Hill was also part of Scottsboro's winning 4x100-meter relay team (49.49) along with Chasity Kelly, Adrianna McQueen and Danielle Jackson.

Maggie Thompson won the 3000-meter run (11:03.68) and 1-mile run (5:35.49). Janea Davis won the shot put (34-00) — for the third time in three meets this season — while Emily Bowman won the javelin throw (96-05). Mary Ellen Sandlin took first in the 400-meter hurdles (1:13.08).

McQueen posted runner-up finishes in the 100 hurdles (17.07) and the 100-meter dash (12.95). Other runner-up finishers were Emily Eustace in the pole vault (9-00), Olivia Thompson in the 1-mile run (5:43.01), Kaitlin McBride in the long jump (14-10.50), Maggie Thompson in the 800-meter run (2:36.24) and the 4x400 relay team (4:29.84) of Aquanita Branford, McBride, Jackson and Hill. Kelly finished third in two events, the 100 (13.11) and the 200 (27.73), as did Sandlin in the the 100 hurdles (18.17) and the long jump (13-10). Other third-place finishers were Eustace in the triple jump (31-02), McBride and Jackson in the high jump — both recorded heights of 4-06 — and Davis in the discus (83-09).

Olivia Thompson placed fifth in the 800 (2:40.74). Emelie Pierce finished finished sixth in the 3000-meter run (12:17.03) while Jackson was sixth in the 400 (1:05.29), Hannah Sims sixth in the shot put (23-02) and Robertson sixth in the discus (66-06). The SHS boys had two first-place finishers. Evan McGee won the varsity boys 1-mile race with a time of 4:44.15 while Devin Book took the top spot in the pole vault with a height of 9-06.

Charlie Robertson and Jayson Jackson were second and third respectively in the pole vault, posting heights of 9-00 and 8-06 while Drew Ferrell grabbed a runner-up finish in the javelin (122-06). The relay team of McGee, Caleb Bray, Patrick Pereira and Carson Hutchins finished second in the 4x400-meter relay (3:49.50). Scottsboro had three of the top five finishers in the triple jump. David Moorman finished third (36-04) while Antonio Evans was fourth (35-00.75) and Charlie Robertson fifth (33-06). Nate Brewer finished ninth in the 3000 (10:32.91) while Moore and Green recorded 10th-place finishes in the shot put (32-03) and 1-mile run (5:26.22) respectively.

A few former Scottsboro athletes competed in the college divisions. Allyson Pierce ran for UAH and finished second in the women's 1-mile race (5:37.33). Emily Thompson, competing unattached to a school, finished fourth in the 3000-meter run (11:42.53) while UAH’s Haley Hancock placed fifth (11:42.91)in that same event.

"We really enjoyed cheering for our former athletes and watching other colleges compete," Wright said. "I hope that the meet provided motivation and will encourage our athletes to continue to improve and advance to the next level."
