Scottsboro considers hiring an engineer
Published January 29, 2009
With longtime city planner Curtis Davis set to retire in April, Scottsboro Mayor Melton Potter said Monday, during a work session, he wanted to look at hiring a city engineer in the replace of a city planner.
"I think it could be a big benefit to the city," said Potter.
In possibly replacing the position of city planner with a city engineer, Potter said, "we can teach an engineer planning, but we can't teach a planner civil engineering."
Potter said the position is currently being advertised in The Daily Sentinel.
According to the advertisement, the city is looking for someone with civil engineering expertise for community development, planning, zoning, mapping and to formulate long range plans. A salary of $55,000 to $65,000 with city benefits is included in the advertisement.
"We may not be able to afford the right person," said Potter, "but it's something we need to explore if we can find a suitable individual who meets our needs."
Potter added a key will be that person being a good fit.
"We want someone who wants to be here, and we want to be here," he said.
Council President Matthew Hodges said the item would be included on next week's work session agenda for discussion by the council.
Applications are currently being taken at City Hall through February 5.
On Monday, the council met in a work session after last week's was postponed due to a holiday. A regular meeting followed the work session.
