McDonald’s comes tumbling down

Published September 15, 2009

At 8 a.m. Monday morning Terry Garner made his first swipe with a Komatsu track hoe. Down came one corner of the brick and glass building — roof and all.

People gathered to watch from nearby parking lots. It wouldn’t be long before the Scottsboro McDonald’s, located on the John T. Reid Parkway, was little more than a pile of rubble.

A brand new restaurant will soon be rising at the same location. It is expected to be open for business by mid-December, at the latest, if the weather cooperates.

“We look forward to being back here and having a new facility for our customers,” said Ron Dutton, who owns the restaurant along with his wife, Charlotte, and daughter, Christie Bruce. “It will be the new look McDonald’s, like the one in Guntersville. We expect to be back open in mid-December or before.“

The restaurant closed a week ago. Its tables, booths and equipment were sold and removed by Friday. And the building was prepped for demolition soon after.

Garner, who works for Jackson Paving Company, still had work to do after leveling the building that has served Scottsboro for years. He had to dig out a full basement that was used to store supplies.

“It would take about two hours if it didn’t have the basement,” Garner said. “But we’ll have it all down, including digging out the basement today.”

The company will also remove the debris before Hudson Company of Henagar begins building the new facility, which will be approximately 4,650 square feet and will include an indoor play area. The play area will be located in the right front of the new facility.

“If the weather is okay we won’t have any problems getting the new building ready within 90 days,” Shaun Hill, who will supervise the construction, said. “We’ve done about 1,500 of these so we know what to expect.”

The building will be a little wider and a little deeper, according to Dutton. The business will include a drive-thru lane and approximately the same number of parking spaces. New landscaping will also be put in place around the entire property.

“We hope and believe our customers will like it,” Dutton said.
