Pisgah girls start with pair of wins

Published November 18, 2009

The Pisgah girls basketball team is off to a 2-0 start to the new season.

The Eagles opened the 2009-10 campaign with a 63-55 win over Fyffe last Thursday at PHS before rallying to defeat Cherokee County 44-33 at Etowah High School in Attalla on Saturday.

Pisgah lost five senior starters from last year's regional semifinal team and coach Carey Ellison said his team is "a work in progress" after two games.

"We've got a lot of areas where we can improve," he said. "We've got a lot of parts, we've just got to fit them together."

The Eagles (2-0) got a balanced offensive effort against Fyffe, as three players scored in double figures and five had at least seven points.

Shelby Holley led the way with 18 points, while Dallas Gilley chipped in 11 points and Alyssa Clayton added 10. Pisgah also got nine points from Ella Denes and seven from Lauren Millican.

Whitney Brown scored 19 for Fyffe, which led 15-14 after one quarter but saw Pisgah lead 28-26 at halftime and 46-37 after three quarters.

The Eagles overcome a rough shooting performance (20 percent) to defeat Cherokee County.

Pisgah managed just 12 points in the first half and trailed by seven at halftime, but turned to its defense to get back in the game. The Eagles outscored the 4A Warriors 14-2 in the third quarter to grab a 26-21 lead entering the fourth.

"We came out (in the second half) and got after it (defensively)," Ellison said.

Gilley scored 11 points for Pisgah while Denes had 10.

Pisgah travels out of state for games Monday and Tuesday at The Towns County Tip-Off Tournament in Hiawassee, Ga.

The Eagles play host Towns County (Ga.) Monday at 7 p.m. and face Rabun County (Ga.) Tuesday at 4 p.m.
