Cats win thanks to fourth quarter surge
Published November 21, 2009
The Scottsboro girls basketball team limped through three quarters against Plainview, bogged down by turnovers, missed free throws and inaccurate shooting.
But the fourth quarter was a different story.
Despite all their struggles, the Wildcats trailed by only two points entering the final quarter, a quarter they dominated en route to a 47-32 victory at Scottsboro High School's Hambrick Hall Thursday night.
Scottsboro (2-1) outscored Plainview 21-4 in the fourth, nearly matching their point total through three quarters.
A couple of big shots in the opening minutes of the final period was the boost the Wildcats needed, said Scottsboro girls basketball coach Jerry Kirkland.
"We really struggled to score and it seemed like when we finally made some shots, it got us going," he said.
Katie Kirkland's 3-pointer 10 seconds into the fourth quarter gave the Wildcats their first lead of the second half. Plainview (1-3) responded with a bucket from Caitlin Robertson 19 seconds later, but that turned out to be the the Bears’ final field goal.
Whitney Fielder tied the game at 30-all with a free throw, and baskets by Fielder and Kirkland started an 18-2 run over the next five minutes. Molly Hoge's layup after a steal pushed Scottsboro's lead into double digits with 3:59 to play.
Her steal was one of five Plainview turnovers in the final stanza. The Bears turned it over 26 times in all and failed to score in the game's final 4:40.
Scottsboro's game clinching run came with two starters on the bench, which made the Wildcats' coach happy with the contributions of his reserves.
"Janea Davis, Kelsey Ikard and Lawanda Carter came off the bench and played really well (in the fourth quarter)," Jerry Kirkland said. "Everybody contributed tonight."
Nine different Wildcats scored at least two points, led by Fielder's 10-point, five-rebound performance.
Tyris Branford finished with eight points for the Wildcats, who also got seven points from Ikard and six points and five rebounds from Rachel Gass. Katie Kirkland added five points and Hoge had four points and four steals.
Alex Poole scored nine points for Plainview, which also got seven from Anna Graham and six from Jade Crowell.
The visiting Bears led 8-6 after one quarter and was in front 20-18 at halftime, leading for all but 30 seconds of the first half. Plainview extended its lead to 26-20 with 3:31 remaining in the third period, but Scottsboro pulled within 28-26 entering the fourth quarter before pulling away for the 15-point win.
